I have worked in the radio industry for 3 years at Basildon’s first community radio station, Gateway 97.8, in the the Eastgate Shopping Centre. While I was there my main role was a presenter of the daytime show. If you wish to listen to any of my shows which I have previously presented you can visit the ‘Shows’ tab. The same with my interviews, if you wish to listen to any you can visit my ‘Interviews’ page.
Since leaving Gateway 97.8 earlier this year, I have taken a big step and have decided to work for myself and travel to different events to interview different people from the organizers to the audience and even acts performing.
Check out a show reel of me!
At the beginning, I attended the Radio Club every Saturday until my presenting skills were up to scratch. Radio Club was designed to be a safe place for children and young adults so that they could develop their skills in broadcasting. Other opportunities do come around, some of these include outside broadcasts, attending events and guests that visit the station. Once I had started building confidence with speaking on the radio, it became my opportunity to take charge of the Radio Club Takeover. This show was the third and final hour of the weekend breakfast show every Saturday. I still attend the radio club however in September 2018, I decided to take a back seat and allow the other members to have a chance. Since then I have been completing my coursework and writing up blogs which are posted on the Gateway website.
In the summer of 2018, the opportunity came up when I had the chance to present my first ever Daytime show on Gateway, this show is a three-hour show, 10 am till 1 pm. For my first couple of shows, Editor Johnny Jenkins assisted me to make sure the show went smoothly. Since then every Monday from 10 till 1. I present the Daytime Show. I thoroughly enjoy presenting this show as the music varies enough for my taste including some old classics as well the new chart music. The show is also designed in such a way the there is always a ‘feature’ every 15 minutes.
0-15 – Kelly’s Diary (Hours 1 and 3)/Job Spot (Hour 2)
15-30 – Travel (All 3 Hours)/Sport (Hours 1 and 3)/Showbiz (Hour)
30-45 – Local Artist (All 3 Hours)
45-60 – Community Action (All 3 Hours)
This means that’s there’s always something going on and not just music. Every presenter has their times they believe it’s the best time to talk whether it’s about a guest or whether it’s about a news article. You can listen to a couple of shows here!
Since joining Gateway, I have been involved in a number of ‘OBs’ or Outside Broadcasts. These are special events which I attend amongst other people. During the ‘OBs’ my work can vary hugely from interviewing to taking pictures to setting up and dismantling equipment. Past events that I have attended include; John Barons Fun Walk and the Kodosai event back in 2017. There are other events I intend to attend soon. These events are great places to learn new skills in broadcasting since these are fast-paced events.
Throughout my time at Gateway I have met several notable guests, these usually come from outside agencies like Bright Spark Media or The Marketeers. I have previously interviewed Britain’s Got Talent Finalist, Jamie Raven and Author, Leslie Bonci. I recently had interviews with Gold Medalist, Crista Cullen and Radio Presenter, Anna Whitehouse, with future plans in talk with Cancer Research! All my favourite interviews can be heard here.
